RODENSTOCK-IMAGON, from the manual: “Highly corrected anastigmat lenses are indispensable where needlesharp and realistic rendition is of the essence. On the other hand, any advanced photographer, amateur and professional alike, realize that extreme definition is often unnecessary or even undesirable, particularly in landscape and portrait work. It we expect the picture to bear the stamp of reality we cannot count on the cold, impersonal anastigmat lens as the ideal intermediary. In order to preserve as nearly as possible the original mood of a landscape, e. g. the impression of worm sunshine or of lightflooded, glittering air, the outlines must not be of extreme sharpness.

For such work we designed the Imagon lens. It creates an illusion of three dimensionality by manipulating the residual lens defects. As a result the Imagon has an enormous depth of field and reproduces a more natural distribution of clear definition and hazy overcast. These properties made it a much desired objective for the specialist.

To achieve the performance of the Imagon we use instead of the conventional iris a grid attachment with one large opening in the center and numerous small openings around the edge. Each lens has three such grids with different openings between H : 5.8 (resp. H :4.5) and H :11.5. The degree of definition is controlled by the choice of the most suitable grid and, in addition, by closing the marginal openings to any desired degree while observing the picture on the ground glass. When the small holes are completely shut the definition of the Imagon approaches that of an anastigmat without any of its harsh effects. “
