Solti's legendary 1961 Decca recording remains the benchmark for Strauss's Salome: Birgit Nilsson's titanically powerful soprano owns the title role, while Solti drives the Wiener Philharmoniker with searing, electrifying intensity. Gerhard Stolze's hallucinatory Herod is character singing at its finest. An indispensable document of mid-century opera at its peak, superbly engineered by John Culshaw.
