Simon Rattle's celebrated CBSO Turangalîla-Symphonie is widely regarded as a benchmark recording, with Michel Béroff's authoritative pianism and Tristan Murail — himself a distinguished composer — as an ideal ondes martenot soloist. Paired with Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time, composed under extraordinary circumstances in a German POW camp and performed here by soloists of the calibre of Gervase de Peyer and William Pleeth, this EMI set delivers two of the 20th century's most significant works in outstanding performances.
