The Fitzwilliam String Quartet's complete Shostakovich cycle holds a unique place in recorded history — the first by a Western ensemble, made with the composer's personal blessing shortly before his death in 1975. Their interpretations are considered benchmark readings, especially for the late quartets. This 1998 London Records 6-disc reissue is an essential acquisition for any serious chamber music collection.
